Responding to a potential eBay Buyer who wants your item for Dirt Cheap

I’ve had two emails from potential eBay buyers in the past weeks asking for a ridiculously low Best offer or even asking to pay me in installments. I hate to be a hard nose, but these annoy me. This is business after all! Do I go into a store and ask to purchase something for a lower price because the economy sucks or because I live on a social worker’s salary? Come on people!
I also forgot to add that both emails included their stories of being on disability and their medical diagnosis. I do feel badly about that, but don’t feel it is fair for a potential buyer to give that as a reason why I should give them something for a low price. Feels like a guilt trip!
The one I just got started out like this “I and my daughter were in a terrible accident from a large freight truck knocking us unconscious and we both ended up with permanent brain and body/back injuries, my daughter got more severe brain injuries than me.” Then she ask for an installment plan.
Here was my reply: “I’m sorry to hear about your circumstances. However, I can’t base my business on sellers’ personal lives. I wish I could! However, if you want to make a best offer, knowing payment is required in full within 3 business days…, I’ll either accept or counteroffer. Thanks for your inquiry.”
I wonder how many other eBay sellers are getting these type emails from potential buyers and how they are responding.
